Prosecutors Desk 8-4-10

Regarding the bar grievance recently made public:

My wife Annette and I became acquainted with an orphanage in Guatemala operated by International Children’s Care when we traveled with volunteers to drill a water well on the orphanage property in 2004. Until that time, the children and staff only had contaminated river water to drink.
When we visited there and saw the needs, we decided to try to help. When we got home, I asked people I know to donate to International Children’s Care for the Guatemala orphanage. Some of these people are prosecutors, some are attorneys and a few are defense attorneys, but all are my friends.
We have continued to help the orphanage over the years. We have sent fire fighting equipment, tools for the shop, pillows, mattresses, stoves, lawn mowers, weed eaters, toys, playground equipment, clothing, and many other things that an orphanage of 150 children need. We paid for eye surgery for one of the girls. All donors receive receipts for their donations directly from International Children’s Care.
I have never asked any attorney in Stevens County to be involved. I have never traded favors or given any consideration to any attorney in exchange for a donation. I did not benefit in any way, either directly or indirectly, from any contribution, and neither has any attorney, except for the satisfaction of knowing they have made a difference in the lives of these poor children.
Does anyone think it is a coincidence that this was released to the press on the day the ballots were received? This is simply a political attack, instigated by a former employee. I have done nothing wrong. No one can point to any case or provide any specific facts in support of these rumors. All court files are public records and anyone can look at the files. I welcome the State Bar investigation and hope they will finish their work.

I think it should be noted that it is perfectly legal for a defense attorney to donate to my campaign and benefit me directly, but if they donate to a charity I support, this is made to seem to be corrupt.
