Prosecutors Desk 3-13-2011

In the past few months, we have seen an increase in cases where people are stealing from their relatives.  The thefts go beyond the usual stealing that some young folks inflict on their parents, especially those young people who have gotten themselves addicted to pain medication or other prescription drugs. This theft is usually of money and usually from some person who is well known to the thief.  It is often a child or grand child of the victim.

We have had situations where thousands of dollars have been stolen.  Sometimes it represents the entire life savings of an elderly person.  The money, saved over years and foolishly kept in the house or in a special place, becomes known and is taken.  The money is wasted on drugs and gambling and foolish behavior. At the end of it all, the theft and the thief are discovered.  The fact that a young person will consider the feeling the drug gives them to be more important than the relationship of a family member is a testimony to the destructive power the drug has over the individual and is the best argument for why drugs are illegal and should be kept that way.

There is a continuing move in our legislature to amend the laws pertaining to the medical use of Marijuana and to legalize the establishment of dispensaries to supply those authorized to use the drug.  Previously, the law has not provided for any such establishments, although there have been such places operating. While there is much opposition to the liberalization of the laws regarding medical Marijuana, there are a large percentage of people who favor the increasing liberalization of these laws.  It will be very interesting to see how these bills do in the legislature and what will be the direction the law takes in this regard.

There is also a bill working its way through the legislature to extend the special cougar hunting program that has been in effect for the last 5 years in several northern counties.   In my contacts with people I have been made aware of many situations where cougars have been taking cattle, horses and dogs and been seen in the vicinity of people’s houses and barns.  I would like to hear from folks who have problems with cougars or who have lost livestock or animals to these predators.

Please remember that these predators are dangerous.  They will stalk and kill dogs, cattle, horses and people.  If you see signs of the presence of these cats, be very cautious.  Call the appropriate Law Enforcement agency or the Washington Dept of Fish and Wildlife.  They are charged by law with helping folks deal with these dangerous animals.  Above all be careful.
