Craig Raymond Cosby has been found competent to stand trial.

After several months of delay while evaluations regarding capacity to stand trial and sanity were obtained from both Eastern State Hospital and an independent evaluator, an order finding Craig Raymond Cosby competent to stand trial on  First Degree Murder charges has been signed. He has entered a plea of not guilty and a court date set for the initial scheduling of the court dates leading up to the trial. Unless the defendant waives his right to a speedy trial, because he is in custody, the trial must occur within 60 days. At present, that trial date is set for August of this year. That may change later.

Mr. Cosby, who was age 68 at the time, is charged as a result of the death of his wife, Susan May Cosby age 53, last October. He was arrested in the yard of their home in Marcus, Washington, after calling 911 and telling the operator that he had just shot and killed her. He was taken into custody without incident by Stevens County Sheriff’s deputies who  esponded to the call. Susan was found inside the home lying on her bed.
She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. A large number of items of physical evidence were obtained from the scene which was processed by technicians from the Washington State Patrol. These items are being examined by the State Crime Lab.

Because this is a charge involving Domestic Violence and a firearm, the defendant faces enhancements which increase his potential sentence if he is found to have committed the crime. Mr. Cosby is represented by Mike Clay. It is important to remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed to be innocent unless and until their guilt is established by either a plea or through a trial.
